A pelvic exam is generally not painful, although it can be an unusual experience. Generally, pelvic exams are only painful if there’s a medical issue, such as fibroids endometriosis, or infection.
Annual Exams are Essential for Proactive Healthcare
Even if you’re not experiencing any current health issues, scheduling regular visits with your provider is important. During your annual visits, you can check in on your health goals, discuss any new issues, and make plans for supporting your ongoing wellness. For women of reproductive age, your checkup includes screenings for cervical and breast cancer.
The Fibroid and Pelvic Wellness Center of Georgia is a leading gynecological practice providing well-woman exams in Atlanta. We provide a luxurious space for our clients so that going to the doctor becomes an enjoyable part of your routine.
Well-Woman Exams Include
- Cancer screening via Pap smear, HPV Testing, Mammogram
- Discussing pregnancy prevention and family planning
- Preventative screenings like DEXA bone scans
- Reviewing any changes in your medical history
- Planning follow-ups for visits when needed
What to Expect
During your visit, you’ll meet with your doctor or practitioner and talk through your medical history and any recent changes. Then they will talk to you through the steps of any screenings that you’re receiving.
A well-woman exam is one of the most important ways women of all ages can protect their health and engage in their wellness care. Starting at age 21 and up until about 70, well-woman exams should be performed yearly. It is recommended that the first visit occurs in the mid to late-teenage years.

Pap smears should start at 21, regardless of your sexual activity. The exam checks for cervical cancer and signs of HPV. If the results are normal, you can opt to get a Pap smear every 3 years as long as you don’t develop any concerning symptoms in the meantime.
A Pap smear does not test for STIs. If you’re sexually active, you’ll want to ensure you’re getting tested for STIs, just let your physician or practitioner know when you visit us for your well-woman exam in Atlanta.
You should start getting mammograms annually starting at age 45, though you have the option to begin at age 40. Those with a family history of breast cancer may start getting them as young as 35, or 30 depending on your doctor’s recommendation.
After age 55, you can continue yearly screenings or opt to switch to every 2 years instead.
Generally yes. You’ll want to check with your specific provider to ensure that you have coverage. Well-woman exams take the place of your annual physical and so are generally covered under most health plans.
Unless you have a specific medical condition or directions from your doctor, there’s no need to prepare your exam. If you typically need to give a urine sample, be prepared for that. If you’re planning on having any blood work done, its best to fast until after your appointment. If you’re on your period, we may ask you to reschedule if your exam will include a Pap smear but that’s not always necessary.
You can always call our office if you have any questions prior to your exam.
