After a hysterectomy, you can no longer become pregnant. When you elect to have a hysterectomy, we remove the uterus and, when necessary, the ovaries. Although you’ll continue to ovulate, you cannot carry a child. If the ovaries are removed, you’ll experience menopause.
Take Control of Your Pelvic Health
Removing the uterus and cervix is the most common non-pregnancy-related major surgery performed on women in the United States. Approximately 600,000 women undergo this procedure every year, 90% of the time the procedure is elective (non-emergent).
One of the best hysterectomy surgeons in Atlanta and a fibroid warrior herself, Dr. Soyini Hawkins founded Fibroid and Pelvic Wellness Center of Georgia with the focus of providing women’s health treatments using noninvasive and minimally invasive techniques.
Common Reasons for a Hysterectomy
- Removing fibroid tumors
- Addressing uterine prolapse
- Treating and removing endometriosis
- Uterine or cervical cancer
Our Process
You’ll start off in a consultation with your surgeon. During this 45-minute consultation, we will discuss the nature of the procedure and any questions you may have. Depending on your medical history and the type of hysterectomy planned, you may need to undergo additional tests to ensure you’re in good health and fit for surgery.
Your specialist will perform your hysterectomy through one of several methods, including total laparoscopic hysterectomy, laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy, or robotic hysterectomy.

No. A tubal ligation is a laparoscopic procedure to remove the fallopian tubes as a means of permanent sterilization. We remove the entire fallopian tube in order to decrease the risk of ovarian cancer. This is a common procedure performed simultaneously with hysterectomies, although we can perform this on its own as well.
Yes. Depending on the condition being treated, alternatives may include medications, hormone therapy, radiofrequency ablation or removal (for fibroids), uterine artery embolization (for fibroids), endometrial ablation, or less invasive surgical procedures. During your consultation, we can discuss all possible treatments based on your concerns.
It’s possible for your hysterectomy to affect your libido or sexual function if the ovaries are removed. That can lead to hormonal changes that lead to vaginal dryness which can cause discomfort during sex. Some women, on the other hand, experience an improvement in libido after a hysterectomy, especially if the surgery eases pain or discomfort they were experiencing from fibroids or endometriosis.
